Young People Push Pass with Inclusive Sport and Recreational Opportunities

Community sport and recreation is one of the best tools we have to drive inclusion and recovery in Western Australia. That is why Cahoots and Hockey WA joined forces to create inclusive opportunities for young people to get involved and foster mental and physical well-being. Cahoots ‘ participants were facilitated by a Hockey WA for a day of activities that aimed to build confidence and resilience in participants in a safe and inclusive environment. Hockey WA’s coaches provided the basics of field hockey followed by some small games and activities to put their new skills into practice. Afterwards participants got the opportunity to watch the Premier Men’s Division 1 Match, WASPS v Freo.

“Hockey WA are delighted to be able to partner with Cahoots to provide the opportunity for participants to get involved with our sport in a safe and inclusive manner. Hockey as a sport encourages people from all backgrounds to participate, get involved and gain valuable life skills and friendships along the way. We see this as an opportunity to help young adults with overcoming the challenges they may face through using sport as a medium to gain confidence through experiencing something new.” – Melissa Gmeiner (Schools and Inclusion Officer)

Cahoots Teen’s and Young Adult’s camp participants, along with their Young Adults social club and all their volunteers and facilitators were able to attend the activity. For many of them it was the first time giving the sport a go but apart from learning to drive the ball, to scoop, shoot and push pass, they were able to learn valuable life skills that will equip them for everyday activities and to face the challenges ahead with determination and resilience.

The opportunity was especially invaluable for those who might not get the opportunity to engage in social opportunities and develop the friendship and mental and physical well-being that they need to cope with the changes and challenges of the times.

Thank you Hockey WA!

Help us, help others

No matter how small, your contribution goes towards helping Cahoots lower the costs for families using our services. Whilst we are NDIS funded, there is often a shortfall between the funding and the cost of our activities, so your donations mean families can still send their loved ones to our camps and programs.

For many, Cahoots is a life changing experience for both the participants who grow, learn and enjoy themselves, but it also provides respite to parents and families from the demands of full time care. Anything you can spare is greatly appreciated.
